Playoff Night In Allentown: “Hockey Gods” 4/25/25

The Hamilton Street Heroes return home to try to close out the abbreviated 3-game first-round series in the 2025 Calder Cup Tournament.  The Phantoms took game one up in the Wyoming Valley, 5-2 on Wednesday night.  There were contributions all around as the team really took care of business.

Highlights:

Around here, this column was taken to task for a section of the Playoff Preview which described how the Phantoms might lose.  That section, of course, came after the section about how the Phantoms could win.  How dare we accept the possibility of defeat?  Well, first, you don’t anger the Hockey Gods with false bravado.  Apparently, Alex Bump didn’t get that memo:

Bulletin board material? #LVPhantoms F Alex Bump began & ended his media availability after Game 1 taking shots at the #WBSPens defensemen. “Their D didn’t want to play the hard game.” “Like I said, they don’t like to defend. Soft defenders, in my opinion.”

That quote from Tony Androckitis from InsideAHLHockey.com.  But, Alex is the one who has to go out there tonight, so back that up young man.  I guess I wouldn’t mind it as much if it had been from someone who was here all year and who had played the Penguins affiliate before.

Picking up from where we left off in the Playoff Preview (pls go back and read that if you haven’t), let’s take a look at the lines from Wednesday:
…
15 Lycksell 56 Gaucher 74 Wisdom
29 Grebenkin 18 Ābols 21 Bump
17 Wilson 77 Luchanko 90 Richard
43 Eklind 22 Gardner 54 Smith
19 McDonald 7 Belpedio
6 Andrae 5 Samson
37 Ginning 3 Grans
31 Gahagen  (Backup: 40 Petersen)
…
Discussion:  As expected, Wisdom earned the opportunity to be in this lineup with his play this season.  Bump did enough in the past few games to be out there as well, and he made some nice plays–bulletin board quotes notwithstanding.  Jett and that third line with the two AHL veterans is another nice combination.  Eklind and Smith on the fourth line gives a little bit extra physical presence other than Wilson.  I kinda thought Furry might be out there because he has a knack for breakaways.  Avon is always useful because of his ability in the shootout, but we don’t have those in the playoffs.  We understand Gendron was nicked up.  The defensive pairs are as expected, with Andrae sliding back in.

What To Watch

Up Next

First, if the orange and black cannot win tonight, we’re playing a rubber match in the parking lot of the Wyoming Valley Mall on Sunday at 6PM.

Win, and await the results of the Springfield/Providence series.  Springfield is up 1-0 and if they close out the upset and we do the same?  It means Charlotte here for two this week before we head south.  If we can close it out but Providence comes back? That means we head to Hershey for two and expect playoff hockey at home next weekend.

See you at the arena,

@Kram207
