In baseball, “shove” or “shoving” is slang used to describe a pitcher’s dominant performance, often characterized by a high number of strikeouts. It implies the pitcher is effectively overpowering opposing hitters.
-
Dominant Performance:When a pitcher is “shoving,” they are effectively shutting down the opposing team’s offense. This can involve a high strikeout rate, limited hits allowed, and a general sense of control over the game.

About Last Night
When a player gets sent down, there are a few ways they can handle it. We’ve seen a guy not show up for work until the last possible minute or later. We’ve heard tell of a guy who refused to have a place in Allentown and drove back and forth from Philadelphia, reportedly, with “tears in his eyes.” We’ve seen guys sulk, and play a listless and lackluster game.
But then we’ve seen Mick Abel and a few like him. He’s just going to get to work and prove beyond all doubt that he doesn’t belong at the Triple-A level. Last night was his second such game since getting sent down prior to the All Star Break. Six more innings, 2 hits, no runs, 5 strikeouts. 85 pitches, 51 strikes. He lowered his season ERA at Triple-A to 1.83. The IronPigs won 5-2.
There were details to work on, to be sure. One was keeping the four-seemer down in the zone, as the flat nature of his pitch was allowing major league hitters to tee off a bit. He came out guns blazing and perhaps that is a harbinger of a relief arm down the stretch. He’s on-turn with Taijuan Walker in Philadelphia who navigated four innings last night, so things are looking good for Abel. Certainly, development needs to continue on the big league level, but he’s ready to do that even with the Phillies as he won’t be costing them games any more than the alternative(s).
More on the pitching last night: The seeds were sown on Friday when Mosser used professional pitching to keep the Red Wings bats largely in check. That got overshadowed by Harper and Hoffman throwing batting practice in the later innings. Adonis “Funky Cold” Medina worked an inning out of the pen. It was an adventure. One run on a solo shot, but he had to work out of bases loaded to otherwise escape. Devin Sweet came in with an “oops all curve balls” inning to strike out the side. I think he threw two chang-ups and missed an immaculate inning by two pitches. If I’m Alan Rangel, I took notes.
Or, I don’t have to. Because Garrett Stubbs, who called a great game behind the plate, will tell me. You could see the interaction between him and his brother when they had the opportunity to be together near the plate. It was fun to watch.
