Hockey Day In Allentown: Griffin Reprise 10/27/24

“It could even be a boat”  -Peter Griffin

About Last Night

The Grand Rapid Griffins eschewed their great uniforms for replica red wings garb and scored way more goals than the Phantoms.  You know, there’s shots. There’s “shots on goal.”  Then there are dangerous chances that have a decent probability of finding the back of the net.  It’s that last category that the Phantoms are lacking right now.  So the Phantoms are generating plenty of shots directly into the logo on the goalie’s chest, but rarely the dangerous, back-door, breakaway, kind of things.  The final was 5-2 in the first game of the season for Cal Peterson’s retirement tour.

Roster Notes

News came just prior to the game that D Emil Andrae and G Alexei Kolosov were to get the call to the Flyers.  Kolosov is slated to play today for the Fly Guys, 7PM tonight at home versus Montreal.  Out on the socials everyone wants to look at “the numbers” to see how he’s played.  Around here we like to look at “how he’s actually played” and it’s not been great.  Biggest worry:  Juicy rebounds.  But I wish him the best–get some NHL checks and have a post-game cheesesteak and settle in to being in Pennsylvania for the season.

Lines From Last Night:

90 Richard 22 Gardner 15 Lycksell

10 Brown 18 Abols 27 Tuomaala

43 Eklind 13 Furry 74 Wisdom

17 Wilson 56 Gaucher 91 Desnoyers

19 McDonald 7 Belpedio

37 Ginning 5 Samson

3 Grans 12 Attard

40 Petersen  (32 Makiniemi)

Scratches:

16 J.R. Avon, 20 Cooper Marody, 36 Sawyer Boulton, 57 Mason Primeau, 72 Alexis Gendron, 73 Massimo Rizzo

Notes:  Attard slots back in after getting Friday night off.  McDonald had a fight and won it; he continues to be one of my favorites but he doesn’t need to fight to be that.  Avon with the night off, I hope he’s healthy.  Marody still conspicuously absent for a guy who has battled injuries ever since he arrived in Allentown.  The three-headed prospect monster of Tuomaala, Desnoyers, and Lycksell really need to start showing up on the score sheet more prolifically.

GAME DAY!

It’s a Sunday matinee for the Halloween celebration.  Check your pregame to find out about parades and pumpkins and costumes and all of that.  Check yesterday’s post  for more information about the Griffins and their first visit to the Lehigh Valley.

We’ve got a 3:05PM start time, 2:00 doors, 1:45 Premier Members.  Like last night, many good seats still remain and there are some nice deals on the secondary market.  Even for scout night last night the turn out was pretty light.  I was hoping the Griffins would be a better draw.

Kram Komplains About The Arena:  Seriously, why can’t they hire enough ushers?  I have really nice seats, and yet there’s a constant stream of people wandering up and down the aisle like Ansel Adams on too much Tim Horton’s.  The section I used to sit in has an usher every single game.  Oh, but we have a security guy.  He sits in the front row, drinks coffee and watches hockey. He never talks to anyone or helps any fan with anything unless it’s the other security guy bringing him a fresh beverage.  In the third period he’s too tired to even fully stand up during the whistle.  I don’t see how he’s securing anything.  It would be better to have an usher who could manage to walk up and down the stairs.

OFFICIALS

Referee Mike Sullivan (#47)

Referee Tyler Spott (#38)

Linesperson Robert Peterkin (#51)

Linesperson Chandler Yakimowicz (#60)

Scouting the Officials:  Same duo as last night, they missed a couple obvious calls but mostly called it OK.  New Linespeople as last night the non-Jud fellow missed a couple obvious offsides calls that could have helped the Phantoms had our offensive ineptitude not been in the way.

What To Watch

  • I think we see the regular season debut of Eetu Makiniemi in net.  I don’t think they ask old man Peterson to go back-to-back-day-game-after-night-game.
  • Watch to see if any of the Phantoms can shoot the puck not directly to the goalie.
  • Watch to see if Marody or Avon are in the lineup
  • Watch to see how the Phantoms respond in their first 3/3 of the season
  • Watch to see if the Griffins wear their more colorful jerseys
  • Watch to see if the Griffins start their prospect goalie again or if they use they guy they just got from the ECHL

Up Next

The Phantoms head out on the road next.  They’re in Hershey on Wednesday, Springfield on Saturday, and then Wilkes the following Wednesday as we enter November.  The team returns to the PPL Center on Friday, November 8 for the rematch with South Scranton.  Then Utica on a Saturday night and South Scranton again on Wednesday for the first home mid-week affair of the season.

See you at the arena,
