IronPigs Today: “Weird Feeling” 7/23/25

“People think I’m crazy but I’m in demand
Never heard a thing I said”

-Ozzy (RIP) (with Randy Rhoads)

Just over a week to the trade deadline?  It feels like things are going down.  Not just for the Phillies, but around the park there’s a bit of buzz as some situations are playing out.  Not even just for the IronPigs!  Some surprises from the Orioles affiliate yesterday as well.

Yesterday’s News

It wasn’t until we got to the ballpark that we realized that young Orioles star Adley Rutschman had been added on a rehab assignment for the Tides.  Then we learned that young phenom/prospect Sam Basallo is injured (not on the IL) and might not play until later in the week.  Relief pitcher David Robertson, newly signed by the Phillies, is in the house, but hasn’t pitched yet.  Reportedly, he’ll pitch four times over the next 15 days for us–barring pitcher injury with the Phillies.  There’s the looming prospect of an Aaron Nola rehab.  And, some roster moves were made.

All this and the Pigs just go out and get a walk-off win on a Rodolfo Castro solo home run in the bottom of the ninth.  The Crizzler comes of the Dev List to pitch six innings of 1-run ball.  The ‘pen held up for a change despite a hanging curve from Sweet which got taco’d.

It’s just a feeling.  But more crazy stuff seems like it’s on tap for this week.

Roster Update

As above, RHP Nabil Crismatt came of the Dev List  to make his first start since the break.  Today I Learned:  There’s no limit to how long you have to be or can be on the Development List.  It’s the Wild West.

RHP Adonis Medina, who had an adventurous inning on Saturday night in relief, was sent to Reading to (a) work on stuff and (b) help support the Double-A pitching staff which has had their struggles.

3B Luis Verdugo was promoted from Reading and promptly banished to the Development List.  Since there’s no rules then, whatever–but, since the arrival of Carson DeMartini in Reading and the demotion of blog nemesis Nick Dunn (who hit a HR yesterday, BTW, in a Reading win), Verdugo hadn’t been getting much playing time.  We’ll see what we can do.

RHP David Robertson was officially added via option, from Philadelphia.

C Josh Breaux was activated from the Development List

RHP Daniel Harper was added to the Injured List.  Perhaps an injury was responsible for his performance the other night.  Get well soon.

RHP Wil Crowe was removed from the Injured list and re-assigned to Double-A Reading

Rotation Update

Wednesday: RHP Gabe Mosser

Thursday: RHP Andrew Painter

Friday: RHP Mick Abel

Saturday: RHP Alan Rangel

Notebook

Gabriel Rincones Jr had a tough play at the plate where he seemed to be nicked up a bit, near the end of the game.  Since he was DH, no substitution was listed.  We’ll monitor his status.

In Philadelphia, RHP Joe Ross went on the Injured List with back spasms.  RHP Alan Rangel was recalled to fill his spot in the bull pen.

Norfolk Updates

In addition to the Rutschman/Basallo news above, RHP Chayce McDermott, Baltimore’s #3 prospect, looks to have been scratched from their rotation for this series.  He had elbow discomfort on July 10, which cause him to leave a game early, so perhaps that’s something.  We wish him the best.

A couple other names to know from this team:

RHP Roansy Contreras is on this team and set to start on Saturday.  He was once a highly-touted prospect traded from the Yankees to the Pirates.  He kicked around with the Angels and Rangers since falling out of grace in Pittsburgh.  He had roster interest from the Reds and Yankees (again) since then, before landing in Norfolk with the Orioles organization.  He’s 6-2, 4.19 in 23 games, 11 starts, this season with the Tides.

Old friend INF Vimael Machín is on this team, which I had forgotten since we played them in Norfolk.

Former Orioles first-round pick and highly-touted prospect OF Heston Kjerstad is on this team.  He is not playing well.

Weather Update

It still looks like a good week, getting hotter as the week rolls on.  Friday and Sunday look like the biggest risks for a rain shower to pop up.
