IronPigs Today: “Incomplete” 9/5/25

We can’t believe they played as much baseball as they did–and maybe the IronPigs didn’t play to the weather the way they should have.  Extra baseball on tap for today!

[UPDATE]: Second game appears to be a full, 9-inning tilt.  Earlier version of this post said 7-inning.

About Last Night

Didn’t think there was any way they were going to play–but there was a window and they got things moveing around 7:20.  Gabe Mosser was brilliant early on, getting soft contact and missing some bats.  With the IronPigs feeling pretty good up 3-0, Mosser went out for the sixth.  Then things went sideways.  If there was a better eye on the radar, perhaps you send a reliever out there to hold them off until the rains come, then notch the regulation win.  But, with Mosser giving up 6 in the 6th, the Pigs down 3-6, the tarps were pulled–kind of–and we’re left with a game in the balance.  Back in little league, that’s a tough loss for the visitors, because you go back to the last full inning and with 5 in the books you have a 3-0 win for the home team.  But here, we continue.  The game will pick up with two outs in the top of the sixth, today at 5:00PM.

Regulation innings were played and buffets were served, so no rain credit for Thursday night.  Your Friday ticket is good for the completion of the Thursday 9-inning game, as well as another 9-inning job as the Friday tilt.

Another oddity: As we were leaving, and the tarps were coming out, the umpires suddenly halted the tarps.  Weird decision with the rain pouring down, because even if things calm down, the field might be unplayable if you don’t tarp the infield.  Ultimately, I guess they did get the cover on, and they should be able to get things in shape for tonight’s game as the weather looks OK all day today.  Hicklen had a home run last night as part of the IronPigs scoring.

Transactions

Gabe Mosser was activated from the Development List in order to pitch in last night’s game.  The Mud Hens did get a pitcher from Erie, but not a starter.  Reinforcements for their staff which has been impacted from Detroit.

IronPigs Friday: RHP Alan Rangel (5-3, 4.72)

Mud Hens Friday: RHP Randy Dobnak (1-0, 2.38)  Scouting:  The veteran from Pittsburgh has MLB time with Minnesota over the past several years.  He’s started for AAA St Paul this season as well as Toledo.  he came over to the Detroit organization from the Twins at the deadline this season.  He was originally signed by the Twins as a minor league free agent following the 2017 draft.  He’s a ground-ball pitcher who also gets some swing-and-miss and doesn’t give up walks.  He has a low-three-quarters arm slot and features, in order of usage, Sinker, Slider, Changeup, Four-seam.  As expected, he’ll increase usage of the slider versus RHB and the Change versus LHB.
