IronPigs Roster Update: Opening Night

More moves than expected today as we get ready to play baseball.  So we’ll update in a stand-alone post:

 

– INF Sergio Alcántara (#6) and OF Óscar Mercado (#3) have been signed to minor league contracts for the 2026 season (retroactive to 3/26). Both players have reported to LHV.
– INF Christian Cairo (#00) had his contract selected by PHI and was optioned to LHV (retroactive to 3/25)
– RHP John McMillon placed on the Development List
– 1B Keaton Anthony (R Foot Surgery), RHP Andrew Bechtold (R Shoulder Discomfort), RHP Michael Mercado (R Shoulder Tear), SS Aidan Miller (Lower Back Discomfort), OF Gabriel Rincones Jr. (L Knee Discomfort), and INF José Rodriguez (R Shoulder Tear) were all placed on the 7-Day IL
– INF Erick Brito (L Hand Surgery), C Mark Kolozsvary (L Knee Surgery), and RHP Daniel Robert (Cardiac Event) were all placed on the 60-Day IL

Stuff We Knew

We knew Mercado was on the way back.  We knew Cairo was put on the 40-man because he had an escalator clause in his contract.  We knew about injuries to Keaton Anthony, Aidan Miller, Gabriel Rincones and Daniel Robert’s balky heart.

News

Sergio Alcántara has 193 games of MLB experience with a myriad teams.  He was in camp with Washington this season and was released by Rochester earlier this week.  In 2025 he played one game with San Francisco and 113 with AAA Sacramento and AAA Reno where he slashed a combined .251/.368/.341

In addition to Daniel Robert, we wish good healing for Erick Brito and Mark Kolozsvary following their surgeries.

Jokes about betting (Rodriguez) and “are the Mercado’s related?” will be suspended until those guys can get healthy.
