It wasn’t a pitcher’s duel, but we did learn something about the two headlining pitchers last night. The Pigs set a wins record and pushed the Smets to the brink of elimination as well. Good guys prevailed 8-2.

About Last Night
Is RHP Griff McGarry still a MLB prospect? It’s been an up-and-down season for McGarry, and perhaps a turning point in his career. He returned to Triple-A last night and proved that he could get guys out to the tune of 5.0IP/1H/1R/2BB/8K. He threw 89 pitches, 51 of them for strikes, which isn’t the most efficient outing but it gets the job done. We still think he’s a reliever around here, but if I’m the Phillies I bring him back as a Triple-A depth piece and let him find his best role–kinda like they did with Seth Johnson this season. In any case, we wish Griff the best of luck going forward.
Why is RHP Kodai Senga on the Syracuse Mets? If memory serves, he was brought in from Japan to be the savior of the New York Mets rotation. He got nicked up earlier in the season, but how is he in Triple-A at this point, while New York fights for their playoff lives? Well, I think we learned that last night as well. Over 3.2 innings and 81 pitches we think we counted four secondary pitches that were thrown for strikes. Many missed badly. Hitters could just hunt fastballs, and at first they missed on a couple juicy ones, but the ‘Pigs finally got to him in the fourth and tagged him for four runs. And that was that. Command of his secondary pitches looks to be why he’s in Triple-A, is our opinion.
Last night was the IronPigs’ 86th win on the season, which is the most in a season for the franchise, ever. Now, granted the team didn’t always play a 150-game schedule, but it still goes to show that this has indeed been a nice season for winning baseball at Coca Cola Park. Why? Well, hopefully we can revisit that in a Post-Season Postmortem of sorts, which is in the works.
The loss pushed the Smets to the brink of elimination, still trailing Scranton by three games now with three games remaining. We’re guessing they have the tie-break because there hasn’t been any crowing from Moosic about playoffs. Yet. Go Jacksonville?
Rosters Update
The IronPigs activated Griff McGarry to make last night’s start. The corresponding move was to add Andrew Painter to the Development List. Readers of this column know full well, that roster move means nothing for Painter.
New York grabbed three RHPs from Syracuse yesterday morning, then in the afternoon activated old friend RHP Yacksel Rios from the 60-day Injured List. Although his roster designation had him on rehab in Brooklyn, he had been sighted at the stadium earlier this week. He gave up four runs in the eighth last night.

Pitching:
IronPigs: RHP Mitch Neunborn (0-4, 8.10)
Syracuse: RHP Joander Suarez (1-2, 9.28). Notes: Suarez is 25 and from Venezuela. No relation to Ranger Suarez as far as we know. He spent most of this season on Double-A Binghamton, and is currently listed on their roster as well. However, he did not pitch in either of the two playoff games defeating the Somerset Patriots and giving Binghamton a spot in the Eastern League Championship. He’ll need to get activated or replaced to pitch in this game. By way of scouting, Suarez is more wild and more hittable than the Mets would like. His FB tops out at 95. He also throws a true 12/6 curve and a change with serious arm-side fade.
See you at the park,
